I had just settled into my room at the Bachelor Officer Quarters, when my room phone rang.“Sir,” said the female voice on the other end of the line. “I’ve been informed to let you know you’ve been assigned duties as ‘Officer of the Day’ by the Battalion Commander.”“OK,” I said, “What do I need to do?” I asked.I was a senior Second Lieutenant and had just gone on to Active Duty in the US Army after spending two years in the National Guard, finishing up my college degree. I was not expecting to be assigned “Officer of the Day” duties so very quickly.“Well, sir,” the voice replied. “You’ve got to inspect the guards and check the motor pool, but other than those details, not much else.”I looked at my alarm clock. It was still early in the evening.“The Sergeant of the Guard told me I can come by and pick you up whenever you’re ready to inspect the guard posts and the motor pool.”I told the young soldier on the phone to pick me up at twenty-two hundred, military time for ten at night.I waited outside the lobby of the bachelor officer quarters and right on time, a HUMVEE pulled up, with a small-framed, young soldier driving. I noticed she was cute, with her blonde hair pushed up under her cap, istanbul travesti and sparkling blue eyes. She asked if I was the Officer of the Day and I nodded my head.“That’s me,” I replied, taking up a seat in the Humvee.Specialist Amy Thompson, steered through the parking lot, heading back to the Battalion housing area. She didn’t say anything as we headed to the Battalion Headquarters and neither did I.I darted into the Battalion headquarters, telling her to, “stay put,” while I checked in with the Sergeant of the Guard. The Sergeant of the Guard popped to attention when I stepped into the Battalion Headquarters. I told him I would be checking the company headquarters and the motor pool and that if I needed anything, I’d call him. He rendered a quick hand salute and that completed my check-in process. It didn’t take long to check all the places I needed to check. The guard at the motor pool was sitting in the shadows of a maintenance building when we pulled up. I reminded him to stay alert. He jumped to his feet, shocked at seeing me standing outside the gate.“I think you scared him, sir,” said my driver, as I resumed my seat in the HUMVEE.“Take me back istanbul travesti to the BOQ,” I instructed. She dutifully steered the Humvee back down the road and towards the BOQ. As we pulled up to the front of the BOQ, I looked at her before exiting the Humvee. She had both of her hands on the steering wheel, very professional-like. She glanced in my direction and our eyes met.“You’re a good driver,” I commented.“Sir, thank you, sir,” she replied. I slipped back into the seat I had just got out of.“How long have you been in the army,” I asked.“Four years, sir,” she replied.“You have two more years to go,” I surmised. “Are you re-upping or getting out?”“I don’t know, sir,” she replied. “I kind of like the army. I’m hoping to go back to school and then to college.”“College is good,” I replied. “What will you study?”“I don’t know,” she replied, staring straight ahead into the vast expanse of the parking lot and the nothingness of the night. I was feeling rather lonely, and quite honestly, a little interested in some companionship. So I decided to test the waters, even though I knew very well that officers and enlisted soldiers are not supposed to co-mingle istanbul travesti socially.“Do you want to come in?” I asked.“Sir,” she replied, “I’m not allowed.”“I only asked if you wanted to come in,” I replied, with the emphasis on the word wanted.“Sir,” she replied, “You’re an officer.”“Yes, I am, I replied, “But I’m a guy first.”She stayed quiet, as did I. After what probably seemed like an eternity, I asked her to park the HUMVEE in a marked space. She did as I requested and sat with her hands on the steering wheel.“What is your first name?” I pressed.“Amy,” she dutifully replied.“Can I call you ‘Amy?’” I asked.“Sir, yes, sir,” she replied.“Do you have a boyfriend?” I asked. I didn’t see a ring on her hand, so I was pretty sure she was single.“Sir, no sir,” she replied, her gaze fixed straight ahead.“OK,” I replied, “I’m not going to force you to do anything you don’t want to do.”She remained stoic and focused. Neither of us said anything for quite a few more minutes. She took in a deep breath and forcefully exhaled. I could sense she was starting to cave.“You know I have to get back,” she said.“I’m the Officer of the Day,” I replied. “You answer to me and not anyone else, right now.”She lowered her head in silence.“Shall we simply call it a night?” I pressed. She reached up and turned off the engine to the HUMVEE. I stepped out and then silently peered back into the HUMVEE. I started walking toward the lobby doors of the BOQ when I heard her call out, “Wait for me.”
